the type of throttle you use is your choice...1/2 the guys I race with have thumb, 1/2 have twist....I run a twist and would have it no other way...but I have a motorcycle backround so a twist is natural to me....just go with whatever is comfortable for you...if you are racing XC you will be using it for 2 - 2.5 hours straight so it has to be whats best for you....have fun!!
