I have had an 2002 400ex and i now have a 2005. I have to owners manual from both machines sitting right in front of me.

    2002 400ex:
    "Primary reduction 2.826
    Gear ratio 1st 2.917
    2nd 1.938
    3rd 1.474
    4th 1.182
    5th 1.000"

    2005 400ex
    "Primary reduction 2.826
    Gear ratio 1st 2.727
    2nd 1.789
    3rd 1.363
    4th 1.080
    5th 0.925.........
    Reverse gear ratio 2.428"

well i went out riding today with some guys from work. There was a guy on a stock 2001 400ex and we were going to line them up before we loaded up for the day to see which one is faster but....leave it to me to hit a tree stump and bend/crack my lower a arm before we got the chance. but i will posty the results when we do.

ud think the 05s would be faster because of the new and improved ratios, but u gota take in consideration that the 05's weigh 15 pounds heavier, and that could effect the outcome of the race.

Looking the new machine over it looks nice. With the reverse gear i think it is the best all around trail machine .The new face lift really jazzed it up now all honda needs to do is give the 300ex a new look as well. The new 450r is fun to ride but i still like riding the daughters 400ex as well.I dont care what i tide as long as i am riding.........Chris

well no complaints here...i lovce the new quad. but i had an extra 15 tooth from my 02 and i tried to put it on my 05 and the countershaft splines are different this year which kinda sucks but oh well. stock gearing is 14/39.
