I need to know what to look for problem areas on the r. such as places where welds crack and so on

Check around where the motor is connected to the frame. Also be sure to check around the swingarm bolt, swingarm area, and especially around the bottom and in the front were the shocks are.

check normal stuff like bearings and bushings... the frames crack at the shock mount, stem mount, subframe.....etc

check the cases for damage...

try and find a 88 or 89
