The 250r actually came out first in the early 80's as a 3-wheeler, known as the ATC250R. They were all air-cooled up through 1985.

In 1986, the 3-wheeler was liquid-cooled. The same year, they also came out with the 4-wheeled version, the TRX250R, also liquid cooled. So the 4-wheeler was never air cooled.

In 1988, the frame got a slight change. The A-arms were moved foward 1 inch, and the swingarm mounting changed and was shortened by 1 inch.

There are some internal changes in the motor, but the exteriors are all the same. Any year liquid-cooled motor will bolt into any frame.

1985 ATC250R was the first year for water cooling. I raced one in 85,86.

1988,89 TRX models have a "lighter" feel than the 86,87 in that they are able to loft the front end due to the shorter swingarm. The swingarm on the 88,89 is aluminum.

They also turn better and have less tendency to spin out.

    I have an 87 TRX250R(stock) and an 88 TRX 310r.
