if you sink money into a Z it can be a kick *** quad......and ofcourse the R can too. so decide if you wanna get a new generation 4-stroke. or a 2-stroke.

The 250R was and still is considered a " sport quad ", you can
build it into a race quad. The only true " race quads " are the
C-dale Moto and Blaze. They were race ready off the showroom
floor. It takes more than a fast motor and decent shocks to make
a full fledged race bike!
Basically, you could take either machine and make it a racer with some money dumped into it. The z has an advantage because it is about 15 years newer and is still being made.
Stock vs stock, they are pretty close power wise (different because 2 vs 4 stroke).
Advantage for the 250r is that you can find them a ton cheaper.
