Tom Bobrowicz would once again grab the Holeshot on his 300EX with Joseph Pappa moving in fast aboard his Yamaha Blaster, and by the end of lap one, Papa would take over the lead with Steven Mitchell only a few seconds back in second place with Bobrowicz back to third.
By the end of the first lap, Bill Ballance remained in the lead as he emerged from the woods and headed out onto the National MX track, and you could hear the roar of engines echoing through the trees as many other Pros were trying to climb the rooted hill climb behind him.
Next out of the woods was #11 Michael Houston aboard his Four Stroke Tech Honda as he lead the way for his teammates #6 Bryan Cook and #7 Chris Jenks in 4th.
#9 Brandon Ballance throws up a spray of roost chasing after #2 William Yokley holding down the 5th spot.
Only a few seconds behind #23 Bryan Baker was #18 Johnny Gallagher in 8th Place as he held off #16 Santo Derisi hot on his heals in 9th place. #69 Thomas Barrett was back in action this weekend and rounded out the top 10.
#8 Jeremy Rice had dropped all the way back to 11th and just holding off #24 Rhett Butler after a terrific start and #3 Chris Borich and #4 Matt Smiley were no where to be seen?
#14 Andy Lagzdins was also off to a slow start back to 13th with #59 Bryan Hulsey and #5 Chad Duvall in chase.
After waiting and watching the hillside for several minutes after the rest of the Pros and entire Pro Am Class emerged from the trees, I knew something must of happened to both Chris Borich and Matt Smiley, so I headed over to the Pro Pits to find Borich standing in the Pits watching the race as Joe and others worked diligently on replacing his front spindle with the tab for the tie-rod snapped off after Borich clipped a tree heading through the tight railroad section of the course.
With Bill Ballance in the lead, Chris had to stand track side and watch his hopes of a National Championship once again pass him by this season as he was dealt another setback, but in his normal never quit spirit, he wasn’t going to call it a day, instead, he couldn’t wait to head back out to put atleast a few more laps before the end of the race regardless.
As for Matt Smiley, unfortunately, his day of racing was over. Matt Smiley found himself stuck on the one of the hillclimbs and while he was attempting to get some traction, his Predator stood up and flipped backwards and to compound things another rider hit him in the back while he was flipping over which hurt his shoulder and back.
For Smiley, he decided to call it a day and let his body heal, so he would be ready to race the final two rounds.
