My wife and I have riden our 400ex's for years on only trails. They are great trail bikes. I would recommend them to anyone.
I now also have a 700xx and it is amazing on the rutted terrain but it is a bit wide for the tight trails.

Yes they are, I honestly never understood the appeal of utility atvs for recreational riding. I ride my old man's Grizzly 660 from time to time and just get so bored with it. No gears to shift, no jumping, no sliding, no wheelies and just zero fun factor. It's more of a challenge riding that heavy pig and more time is spent on keeping it from tipping over than actually having fun it seems like. I just love to zip around on my EX and have a ball. Only time I could ever see myself on a utility quad is in deep snow trails or for doing chores around the house.
sometimes i like getting on my dads 700 grizzly and seeing what i can do like ride wheelies across the field. it surprisingly gets around pretty good. people like utilities so they dont get stuck and dont get muddy riding. ill be covered in mud my dad wont have a spec on him
No fun in that haha. Yeah, a lady friend of mine is like that, absolutely convinced she must have 4 wheel drive or the quad would be "useless", so far, I've gone more places on my EX than she has and made it look easy. I like getting muddy and especially getting the quad muddy, they look awesome that way!

This wasn't exactly on a trail, back behind an abandoned sawmill there's a few places I go ride and climb steep hills. Not really supposed to go back there I guess but they haven't put up any gates or signs yet so I will keep doing it!

Here's a pic of the quad on the family ranch.

Tooling around in a ditch with the dogs, I do a lot of ditch riding in the winter when all the trails are closed.

Same ditch but mudding it up!

Sometimes I wonder if I am too big for the EX, I just look gigantic on it in this shot haha.

Heading for another puddle in the ditch by the looks of it.

Went up a mountain road last spring and found this halfway to the top, big snowdrift as you can see! :O

And lastly another ditch pic with the dogs. They love to go chase the quad! :D
No idea how that duplicate snowdrift pic got up there, disregard that lol
My son and I on a 2-day ride last week at Wayne National Forest in Ohio. I got off a few times to snap some pics:

This thread really died, but I got some pics today to revive it with!

Parked next to the truck after the day was over. Altogether there was 5 of us out on the trail today, 3 sport quads, and 2 utilities. Pretty awesome day!

And lastly, here's what I pack with me in the woods. Glock 17, there's been lots of bears and mountain lions out this year so best to play it safe. I'd rather have it and not need it than not have it and need it.
Ok, you talked me into it. Couple pics from when my son and I went to Wellsville OH last weekend. This place has absolutely insane hills and climbs.
My 400EX on one of the powerlines:

Awesome view of the Ohio River from the top of one of the hills. I am telling you these hills are huge!

This is not a pic I took but a view of one of the hills we climbed, you can see two quads coming down the line on the right.
