The 79' is different from the other 400's in that it has a smaller bore and a longer stroke. Also with the 79' Yamaha changed the case and cylinder design. The 79' is the father of the YZ465 as well as the 490. It also makes the most power out of the bunch of 400's. You can pick up a 79' on Ebay from time to time. The $ range from $250 to an insane $650- the last one I seen on there went $650."
so a 76 wouldn't be as torquey or have as much hp as a '79??
or any other year but '79 i can only find 76-78 and then some '99's??
The 76-78 Don't have the torque or the hp of the 79'. I'm referring to the stock ratings from back in the day. They are still good through and parts are easier to find for the earlier 400's. Their 85mm bore vs. the 79's 82mm gives them their top end reputation.
