how much would it cost to do this with everything set up with electric start too? what would be the process? cutting and welding or just replacing the motor mounts? thanks

I dont think it will work unless you cut quite a bit. The 400ex motor is much taller then an R motor. And will require cutting and welding and new mount.

why would you want to do that?? makes no sence to put in a motor with less HP and more weight.

I just tried to put a 600kawasaki dualsport engine in my tecate turns out the engine is 5" to tall! better make sure you can fit it in the frame first! and you'll need plenty of clearance from your tank. It puts a real damper on your riding trip when the last thing you hear is a big BOMB!!!

Hello Guys:

This is not going to be an easy project. Here's why.

The 400EX motor is huge compared to the "R" and so is the carb. With all the extra height of the motor because of the valves and the air cooling fins it takes up a LOT of room at the top, right where the upper frame rails are. The carb also eats up a lot of room as well, especially in the area that usually brace the rear shock mount. Also, the carb air intake will most likely hit the rear cross tube that the shock mount is welded to.

On the bottom end, remember the 400EX came from a bike, and that means the swingarm pivots THROUGH the motor, while the "R" pivots behind the motor. That means you will need a special swingarm as well. Also, the EX motor will have to go quite a bit farther down between the frame rails to get the countershaft in the correct spot as compared to the swingarm pivot. That means you will most likely have to cut out part of the lower frame rails and rework them around or under the motor which will cost you some ground clearance.

The project probably can be done, but it won't be cheap, easy, and it most likely won't handle as good as the "R" or the EX since the weight bias will be kind of screwed up since the two were never designed to work as a package.

Hope that helps you out.

Not necessarliy bad news, but it's not just a bolt in project either. Actually though it would probably be easier just to make an all new frame.
