i'm not sure which one it is but i know it is one of the 1st 2 prongs on the front of the distributor.

I always thought the firing order for a small block Chevy was 18436572. I could be wrong, I guess.

ok this is what it is i went and looked. if you are looking at the distributor the prongs are in sets of 2. well the 2 that are closest to you is where you will start. the number 1 plug is on the right hand side if you are looking face on with it (aka drivers side) from there you just work your way around. the next will be the next number on the firing order. and it goes clockwise. hope it helps. if you need anything else just say or if you don't understand.

Any good mechanic has this memorized!

18436572 for most small block chevy's

yep i sed it as the order on the cylinders like the drivers side is 1357 and the passenger is 2468, i got confused, any way i figured it out. but also does anyone know why its backfires at like a steady rpm, i put new plugs wires cap and rotor on and set the timing to 4 degrees @550 rpm which it sed on the emissions thing, and it still does it, like if i just rev it real quick it wont back fire or pop but if i keep it at a steady rpm it pops or backfires, and if i didnt have flowmaters i would have blown up like 30 mufflers

When did this problem start? Does this motor have solid lifters or hydraulic lifters?

i put headers on it and a whole exhaust with flowmasters and it started after that but i think it use to pop when the old exhaust was on it but i think it was alot quieter, it also has hydraulic lifters

if it is backfiring then you might want to doublecheck your timing. just a little to much before or after can make it do that.

If you are sure your timing is dead on, you might run the valves, but hydraulics usually won't cause this problem.

How many miles are on the heads, the exhaust valves might not be seating correctly, you could run a cylinder leak down test.

Good luck!

If you just put headers and a full exhaust system on it, it's probably running a little lean. Depending on your carb, you could probably try putting in some richer primary jets or metering rods and see if that helps. Sounds like a lean "cough" to me.

the carb is a quadrabog

It is 18436572, BUT it depends on how u set your distrubetor in the block, and u need to make sure u have your #1 cylinder on TDC! If u want some quick help go to www.yahoo.com, and look up Ignition timing for a SBC or small block chevy, and u will find everything u need to know and alot more!

Good luck if u need some help PM me and i can walk u threw it!

What kinda motor r u building?

Lossen it up and move it very slowley while using a timing light. And u can adjust your timing to make beter HP, at certain ranges, Are u gona run anything like a MSD BOX im running a 7AL

i think i figured the problem out, i put a new cap and rotor on, let set the timing and let it warm up a little and it runs like a champ when its warm just pops a little for the first 5 mins or so

It sounds like u need to adjust your electric choke if your running one, or your timing is just a little to advanced, did you time it with the vacume advance on or off?

sickyellow400ex
04-02-2004, 10:29 PM
advance off
