I have a 400 ex i have done most of the bolt on performance stuff you can do but I still need more power. I'm thinking of putting a 416 kit in but im not sure if i should just go to a 440. I still want it to be as reliable as stock but i also want to run with the raptors. can somebody help me decide what i need to do to get that power.

This questoin seems to come up VERY often. You should run a 'search' in this forum; I know there are some very good threads out there. The bottom line is that in the end it will be your decision to make. I encourage you to read as much as you possibly can about the different options you have before you buy anything. Good planning will yield good results. Good luck. :D

i guess what I need to know is is it possable to make enough horsepower to run with a raptor without spliting the case to stroke it and without spending a thousand bucke to do it

I'm not the best one to ask that question. Seems to me that you will have to do a lot of dialing in to run with a rappy. But that's just my .02.

Reliable as stock?? Then you better keep your 400 stock and purchase a 450R then. ;)

Nothing is ever reliable as stock. Any motor will last you as long as you dont beat the crap out of it. :)

I just finished my 440, and rode it for first time at
Sand Mountain. And after breaking it in, racing raptors,
ds650s and the new 450r I beat them all. Every time!!
I'm running a 440 kit from C&D racing its 11:1 ross
piston , stage2 hotcams, and pro circuit slip-on.
You will be very happy with it.

I beat a few yfzs, but I think it was dew to rider not
knowing how to ride the bike. But the rest of them
I was no more then 1 to 1 1/2 bike lenghts behind
them. It still made me happy.

Do you have an aftermarket carb and a port and polish job on it?

I was going to say, if you keep up that well with all of those quads, then when you get the carb and port n polish. You may just be beating them!!:D

I have a 416 using a JE 12.5:1 piston with some other stuff and I was able to beat some YFZs up Comp Hill at Dumont. Not sure what they we're running but I know that they definitely had a pipe. At first I thought it might have been rider error but I was going up against 3 others at the same time. It's hard to say. I might hit up Pismo this weekend and check out flats.

what else do you have done to your bike? what gear did you get into? what octane fuel you run?

Here are the details on motor work: 416 w/ 12.5:1 JE Piston, custom port & polished head, 39 FCR Carb, Stage 2 hotcam, Dyna FS Ignition curve #2, K&N Filter and Precharger - airbox outerwear, WB R4 Pro Meg exhaust system and 14/36 gearing. Running VP Red (105 leaded). Sand Skate II edges with 8 paddles (20x11x10)

I was getting 2nd gear starts and would finish out in 4th. While in 4th I would have to feather the clutch once to keep the RPMs up. But with this current setup it just kept pulling. I'm sure it would do a lot better if I dropped a few pounds. Don't get me wrong I've been beat by some YFZs too.

if you wanna go big, 465 stroker baby. Best you can get for your EX.

I'm sure a 465 stroker is nice. But am happy with the 416 for now. I enjoy carving the dunes, and I heard a lot of positive feedback regarding the 416 kit. Personally, I was ready for more power out of the 400. Maybe when I outgrow the 416 I may just give to younger brother and get a Honda 450 :macho

Who here has a 416? My old 01' was a 416 and I was VERY unhappy with it. Felt like a 400 with a tiny bit more kick.

Actually, it felt like a Z400. Haha ;)
