does anyone use synthetic oil in their ds650's? it says in the owners manual not to, but why? clutch worries?

If you run Mobile 1 Red Cap you will be fine. It doesn't have the aditive that other synthetic oils do that make your clutch slip.

I use the Bombardier brand synthetic in my DS with no problems. I'm going to start using it in my EX next oil change. It's a bit expensive at $8-10 a litre and the Bom takes 3 litre's to fill it up but I don't care...it's good stuff. When I put a 12:1 piston in my Baja after running it all last spring/summer....I still had hone swirls in the bore and I ran it hard. I'm probably over doing the oil changes at every 10 hours but after seeing how clean and the little to no wear on the internals told me I'm doing something right. ;)

Perhaps your right but I'm going to keep on doing it for I plan to ride the crap out of my quads every weekend for many years to come. I have to much time and money invested in my quads to be worrying about oil related failures or premature wear. Which quad would you buy?...one with the oil changed every 10hrs or so or one with the oil changed every 50 hrs..everything else being equal.

If your going to run synthetic I would run mobile red cap. My friend had a ds650 and has always ran valvoline 10-40 in it without a single problem.

i change my synthetic mobile 1 redcap oil every 35-45 hours & it could go longer....I ride my fourwheeler everyday after school & at night & especially every weekend. i guess if you can afford the oil change for every 10 hours (which the oil prob. still hasnt broken in or changed color at all) its your choice & prob. nothing I say to you will make you change your mind...by the time something ever even happened with premature wear or another engine failure you would have already spent all that time changing your oil & prob. more money on it...the DS's I have also heard are very good engines & last a long time

thanks for all the input. i use mobil 15-50 redcap in my 400ex, 2 of my brothers have 2000 ds650's and it says in the owners manual not to use synthetic oil. the only reason i can think why is so people don't use the oils with friction modifiers in them. they're fast machines and a lot better in the woods than people think.

theres no friction modifiers in the mobile 1 red cap ;)

You got that right! If you want to keep your machine in top running condition you have to give something back. It's all about preventative maintenance. If your comfortable with 35-45 hrs. between oil changes then carry on. Performance and longevity is my goal and frequent oil changes is one of many things I do to keep my machine's running to their peak.

By the way, after 10hrs. the oil is black but still abit transparent. See you at the finish line!;)

Molybdenum is the most slippery "friction modifier" there is, and I have ran moly oils in lot's of machines, and never had clutch slippage problems. You could always try it for a while, and if you have problems with clutch slippage, you could go back to the other oil and replace your clutch plates. Clutch plates are cheap, engines and gears are not!
