THE ADVANTAGES OF WIDER AFTERMARKET A-ARMS AND AXLES IS CLEAR TO ME, BUT WHEN IS IT CALLED FOR TO EXTEND THE A-ARMS FORWARD, AND THE SWING ARM REARWARD? I'M LOOKING TO IMPROVE HANDLING IN THE REAL WORLD,(SOME SAND, SOME HILLS, SOME WOODS, LOCAL TRACK) NOT FULL BLOWN MX. MY '86 250R HAS FORWARD A-ARMS AND A SHORTER THAN STOCK SWING ARM (BOTH WIDER THAN STOCK). SO WHAT IS THE HOT SETUP FOR THE EX? I'L GET AROUND TO MOTOR MODS ONCE THE CHASSIS IS SET UP.

Well I am not sure what you are riding in the first place, typically you would put +2+1 arms on a banshee or a 250R, but the swing arm combo confuses me? the bikes that need a 1.25" swing arm is the 450R and 400ex, so what are you riding?

I JUST EDITED MY QUESTION. I RIDE A 400EX

Ok well a plus one on the wheel base on the a-arms and swing arm +1.25 will be 1" to much and you will blow the tires off the bike. if you have a 400ex I suggest a +2 on the a-arms and a +1.25 on the swing arm.

ISN'T THE PUPOSE OF FOREWARD A-ARMS TO ALLOW THE SUSPENSION TO SOAK UP BUMPS AT HIGH SPEED? THEY DON'T REALLY HELP SOFTEN LANDINGS FROM BIG JUMPS MORE THAN A-ARMS THAT ARE JUST WIDER THAN STOCK, RIGHT? AND WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH A SWING ARM? WELL, IF YOU PUT +2+1 A-ARMS ON A 400EX DOES THIS FACILITATE A NEED TO EXTEND THE REAR SWING ARM? WITH MILD MOTOR MODS IN MY WHEELER'S FUTURE I'M TRYING TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE REASONING BEHIND EXTENDED A-ARMS AND SWING ARMS. I'M SURE OTHERS COULD ALSO BENEFIT FROM AN OPEN ENDED CONVERSATION ON THE SUBJECT.

THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE ACID RAIN. I'M LEANING TOWARD +2+0 A-ARMS AND A +1.25 SWING ARM (+4 AXLE). I GUESS SHOCKS ARE NEXT ON MY LIST!

If you extend the swing arm +1.25 it makes it closer to a 250r than before, the only reason +2 +1 arms exist is for cost, it is cheeper to buy a arms than it is to buy a swing arm, but this dons't correct the weight transfer issues, as the swing arm does. The plus 2 helps with more travel and shock adjustment=better landings!

I would get +2 or +3 long shock A-arms for it if you are replacing the shocks anyway, it will be worth every minute and dollar, trust me

hmmmmm if the wheel base is longer there will be less weight transfer to the rear wheels, ie less traction, the blowing the tires off is an exageration.
