on a 400ex do you have to pull the motor out to replace the piston and rings or can you just remove the top end and get to it?? thanks

It can be done with the motor still in the frame. The head can be a mofo to get off, but once you get past that, it's easy sailing.

hey, i am from illinois too. i live in the big town of staunton. this is about 20 minutes south of litchfield and 35 minutes north of edwardsville. i am not sure if you have heard of these towns or not, but i figured i would tell you.

i have been to litchfield for dirtbike harescrambles i know exactly where staunton is you are 1 hour south of me im in washington ill. (peoria area)~ i go riding mostly at badlands and fox valley~ ill be in taylorville racing the 1st district hareescramble next weekend and this weekend im undecided weather to race in prophetstown or just go play ride somewhere~ i should park my quad in the garage and put a new piston in rings in it before i lock up my motor:o

Get a Clymer's , good pic's and info,it's easier if you have 2 people to compress the rings into the jug though, it will feel like a whole different motor if you plan on bumping up the compression

check the cylinder walls for wear while you got it apart. if it needs bored, just putting rings in won't help, and you'll be throwing money away as you'll have to buy rings again with the new piston. ;)

hey, i actually am planning on going to taylorville this weekend. i am not sure if it will work out, but my friends and i are planning on going saturday. we have never been there. heck, i don't know if it is even open. a couple people just asked me to go so i said yep.

next weekend is the harescramble there district 17's 1st race of the year~this weekend theyre prollyopen but call~ hope you like BIG jumps they have a great MX track but thier trails will be literally underwater~ i swear the place is in a flood zone and i dont know about you but it rain here all night

oh crap, i don't care for the water. also, we don't have many large jumps here so i am not the most experienced on an mx track. :p
