Just curious as to what a good PSI rating would be for a pressure washer to clean bikes with, been lookin at the campbell hausfeld ones that are anywhere from 1500 psi up to 2400psi, would the 1500 do the job cleanin mud off?

I have a pressure washer rated at 1600 PSI, does the job nicely. You don't want one to powerful.

yah, i was thinkin 1500 would be fine, the ones at the car wash are so high they take paint and decals off, dont want that, also im sure with a lot of pressure it isnt good on bearings and engines..

yeah, i recommend not going past 2000psi but the lower the better.

i had an ancient 800psi one(that did great), but it broke so now i have a 1600.

Ours goes up to 4000psi. I use it at 3000psi with I think a 15 degree nozzle. Its more than I need. 1600-2400 should be fine!;)

Do any or all pressure washers have adjustable PSI?

ghetto adjustable = move nozzle further away from quad

I have a Honda one, I think 2400 psi... I have it adjusted all the way out... I think im gonna get one of those cheap electric ones cause this gas one has WAY too much power, annoying to have to pull start after riding, and is always out of gas...:cuss:

I don't recommend using a pressure washer at all on a quad. Like northeast400 stated, it can push small bits of sand and crud into places you don't want it. I only use the water out of a garden hose, about 70psi, and a rag. Even a "low" rated washer, under 2000psi can do damage. I would always keep the nozzle at least three feet away while washing.

It's not possible to actually change the psi output of a pressure washer. The pistons in the pump combined with the speed it is turned is what create the pressure. The size of the output orifice can be adjusted on some and this somewhat changes the force of the outcoming water. The psi is actually the same, but the water column is larger so it comes out with less velocity.

3000+ psi washer can be very destructive. A 0 deg nozzle is usually referred to as a "cutting" nozzle. Put one of those nozzle on the end of a 4000psi machine and it will damn near take the chrome off a trailer hitch. :eek2:

The 15 degree (maybe 20) nozzle cut the tread on my tire!!!:eek2: I put the 0 degree nozzle on, and well let me tell ya what! You could wash the ungly right off monkeyboy with this bad boy!!:blah: j/k man!

I be careful, but like a had a little grease on my wheel, and by my sproket, I put it closer there, but not in spots where it doesnt need it. If ya scoot it back it has hardly any pressure, it doesnt take a jenius to figure out what is too much...;)

Well if you quad got muddy and chitty looking, than half the crap you rode thru is going to get into your bearings and seals. Pressure washer or not.

I am still cleaning sand out of mine from Florida.

Hot water helps take off the heavy mud.

It's not recommended to use one. I believe within the first 5 pages of your owners manual it will tell you the same. But,, it sure makes the cleaning job a lot easier...:o

I personally don't use one and never really plan on it..

I have a 1600psi washer. It gets the job done very well and never had any problems with it. I did have problems finding the right washer though, this is I think my 4th or 5th one and all the other ones either broke in the first 5 minutes or something else was wrong with them. I think it was bad luck also.. :grr:

you guys are crazy! with all the stuff you put your quad through, you worry that you will tear it up washing it. hahahah

i have a honda 13hp, 3600psi, 4 gpm. it awsome! bad habits is right about the cutting nozzle.

power washers are more about the gallon per minute (gpm) then the psi. your local car wash usually only runs 1600psi but puts out 5 gpm. they will fill more powerful then a 2400 psi that puts out 1.5gpm like they sell at walmart.

I have a Honda 2400 PSI washer, when washing the quads I use a 40 degree tip and stay back at least 8 inches. No problems yet, but Im kinda fanaticle about lubing things also.
Just stay away from pivot points and the chain and you should be just fine.
