View Full Version : Any mechanics in here? I am stumped!

I have just replaced my head gasket because I had a oil leak. Im running a 13/1 .120 over JE piston. Compression is fine at 270. I checked all surfaces with a certified straight edge and even installed extra washers to studs just to make sure I wasnt bottoming out the studs in the caps. I also torqued them 33 by the book. The only thing that worries me is when putting the head on I had trouble with one of the alignment dowels (front one)and the front pulled down slow as a result. I had to tap the front down and I am hoping that caused a insufficient torque. Maybe its binding on a burr from me tapping the head down. I am re doing tonight. What do you guys think?

A friend of mine also had a head gasket go on his 440. His ended up being one of the head studs turned when he torqued them down and gradually backed off. According to Curtis Sparks, this is a common problem for 400EX's. He pulled all the studs and loctited them in.
