Starter Noise

I just replaced the starter in my 01' 440ex. The problem I am having is when I press the start button I am getting a god awful metal against metal sound. Does anybody have any suggestions?

It sounds like the gears are not fully catching. Everything was lined up when I put it back together.

can this be caused by the solenoid being bad?

Did you put the spacer for your crankcase on the outside and not the inside? I can almost quarantine you it's this. Undo the 4 bolts and see just to be sure. This happend to me once.

I din't have to take the crank case off. So that can't be the problem.

I thought when you said starter you spelt it wrong and meant stator. sorry about that.
