Hey guys I need your help. I am new to quads. I have been riding dirt bikes and street bikes all my life but Im ready for a change. I have $4000 to spend. I am looking for a used quad. I want a 400ex or a z400. I know I can get a ex for around $3500 with money to spend on exhaust, bumper, etc... If I get a z400 I will have to leave it stock for a while. I am looking for suggestions on what to do. advantages and disadvatages to both. Thanks

Yeah you can get a 400 ex for about 3 grand to 3500 and then use the rest of the money to mod it out with pipes and nerfs or something..I would go 400ex...

if you go over to Z400central everybody will tell you to get a Z400.. everyone here will tell you 400ex.. it just depends who you ask..i have had nothing but good luck with 400ex's. sure, there will be small thing that break/go bad, but nothing major (providing you buy a used one that was well taken care of). I bet the Z400 is a great quad also. i would go with the Z just to be different. with the price drop the 400ex has taken, everybody has or will have one. just what I would do, i didn't say YOU had to...

Yea I really don't know what to do. I like the looks of the z better but the Ex is a lot cheaper. I like the idea of having reverse and a water cooled quad. However it looks like performance parts are cheaper for the ex. You guys that have ex's how often do you wish you had reverse when riding trails. Do you have an cooling problems? I have heard performance wise their is not much difference between the two. Is this true? Another thing I have considered in my purchase is this website. You guys are really helpful and nice. I don't want to sound gay but you know what I am talking about. Thanks for all of your input.

There are alot of really good deals out there. Take your time and you will find a bike with alot of mods that is in your price range.

You have to decide for your self... I was recently thinking what I would do if my EX was stolen now. If I would buy another one, a KFX, or what I would... I love my 400ex, but I wouldn't mind having liquid cooling. I would have to put quite a bit of thought into it. There are too many variable to ask someone else what you should buy. Good luck making a decision.

Well since money seems to be a concern I would think you should consider the cost of replacment OEM parts. You can get alot of 400EX parts for half the price of the same Z parts . Performance wise theres not much difference unless you start spending alot of money in which case you might as well buy a 450.

I have had 2 400ex's and now have a z and next week I'm getting a 450r. I had my last 400ex with my z for about 8 months. In this time I did alot of comparing. Living on a farm allows you to immediatly change quads at will, no loading or unloading just start it up and go. Anyways my stock z was faster on top than my 400ex(10:1 comp 0.040 over piston, WB cam, TC pipe,K&N, jetted, 16T countershaft sprocket) granted the ex was alot stronger on the bottom( this was my modded bike, not a stocker). Yes we switched bikes and riders same outcome( when you have 2 bikes someone is always willing to drive the other one). If I was to do it over I would still choose the z over the ex, But hey I liked the ex, I bought 2 brand new ones! Although with some looking you may could find a better deal on a new ex. A buddy bought a new one last august for $4400 plus tax! This is going to be YOUR quad and YOU have to pay for it so get what YOU want. Honestly you can't go wrong with either one. The ex there should be alot of cheap used parts out there, but if you're buying new they'll cost about the same. Again I am getting a 450r next week so I'm not a suzuki/Honda lover/hater, but just a guy who likes to try all the new quads. By the way anybody want to buy some z400 parts? :)

i think the z was way overated when it came out ...i remember everyone saying it had as much power as a raptor lol...its like 3 mph faster than a ex they both pretty much have the same power ....i personally think the ex handles better from what ive seen, but it aint extremely better either...and as for reverse you never really need it....so I think its a really close call i would ride em both and see which one fits you better

The Z is an updated version of the 400EX, Liquid cooling, Dual over head cams, Plus reverse. The Z is not faster than a raptor stock vs stock, but It will give a raptor a run for the money up un till they both hit 5th gear then its by by Z. Power wise mod for mod the Z will smoke a 400ex.
