all the mags have given the yzf top honors saying the yamaha was faster and beter handling. my question is what to do when the yamadog bumps its 439cc displacement to 450 to me it sounds like it will be a rocketship. but im still going with the honda.

10cc's isn't going to make that great of a difference. Maybe a little bit more power but not enough to make it much faster than the 440.

Magazines are a crock ride them yourself & make your own decision.

magazines are interesting to read, but I have learned to take them lightly, very lightly. 10cc, unless Yamaha gives it a high compression piston with the 10cc (most likely won't, reliability issues), it will only give it a small fraction of a horsepower.

Barely legal

I can vouch for the rocket ship part though.

It sure looks like the mags have an idea in their minds before they even do the comparison. That, and they also have an idea what is more important to them. I have yet to see them actually do a write with stuff that the majority of us normal riders look for in a quad.

the yammie is good but the honda is much better then the mags are saying.

The 450 is a great quad, but Honda did make some really odd choices with it. It is like they were trying to build 2 different quads and screwed up trying to melt them together. If they were trying to build a racer, then they should have done that and let the recreational riders figure it out. Or,build a rec. machine and let the racers figure it out. Turns out both sides are trying to figure it out,and defend themselves against all the blue flamers.

The Rec riders have nothing to figure out.

I think Honda hit the BULLSEYE with the TRX450R.

Yamaha built a MX quad, not to appealing to MOST Rec Riders.

Most of the people who ride quads do NOT race MX. Honda will be king of the 450 market. They know exactly what they are doing.

i think the no electric start was a big mistake...or I'd probably have one in my garage right now.

I also think that Honda should have put a E-start on the trx450r..but its not going to make me not get one.

me and about 4 of my other buddies was talking last year .. and we all said if yammie came out with a bigger bike we would all go and buy one at the same time.. none of us 4 was really to excited after we rode one around the parking lot.. we got on a yfz and had a blast ... this is when they first came out.... we all got a 400ex around the same time they are all 02's

i think i am going to end up with the yfz..

the 450r is comfortable but you can always buy more cushion for the yfz...

in dirtbikes which motor was the best in relibilty ???

No argument that it starts very easy, but not as easy as an e-start. My point is that odd decisions were made by Honda. For pure mx I would not want a battery bouncing around, but the 450r is not the best mxer out of the box. For pure mx the stock gearing would be fine as most will go to an 18" tire to help compensate, again, the 450r is not the best pure mxer out of the box.I was never going to get a YFZ,and I'm quite pleased with my 450,but the thread has to do with what ALL of the mags said, and I think the mags are right.

"Out of the box" the only real MX quad ever produced was the Cannondale Moto. Now, I love my YFZ and it handles, rides, does everything darn near perfect, but it is FAR from stock. Out of the box, the YFZ needs to be regeared as well, the stock gearing of 14/38 is too low, you actually have to go up to a 15 in the front so you dont run out of gear so quick.

Both quads are nice platforms for which to make a heck of a racer, just one is designed to be a little bit closer from the factory. But, I doubt Robbie26wi's 450r rides anything like a stocker. ANYTHING can be made into a decent MX quad with the right amount of money.

Pick your color, go and have fun. If you want to build a true mx quad, be prepared to spend some dough.

no bad leg, just old and lazy..

and after running the NC GNCC yesterday, a few of them caused some major bottlenecks because they stalled and couldn't get restarted.

Whoa, best be careful saying that NO E-start caused problems! Folks here are pretty sensitive about that subject!

How did you do in the race? What brand won?
