I just purchased a used 2000 400ex,like new.Today was my first real time riding it.It seems when i have the RPMs down in second gear or so,I hear a clunking noise by my front sprocket. It really does it when i get ready to do a donut in second gear.As i said its a repeated clunking noise or a heavy rattle.Does anyone know if that is the drive chain slapping somthing,or is it in the transmission? As i said,it seems to only do it when "bogging" in a gear, like begining a donut,or even slow trail riding. As soon as the RPMs go up,you no longer hear it.Needless to say,i couldnt do the donut. Is it because i had the RPMs way down? Any help will be appreciated.I hope i explained it clear enough. Thanks!

How tight was your chain on your 400. It may need adjusted. Check the front sprocket. Make sure it is fine and check the teeth.

My guess it has something to do with the chain being loose.

When im on it,the chains has a lil slack up top,or down bottom, wherever you choose to check it.The teeth on the front sprocket seem good.

Maybe chain is stretched, might need to get a new one, or tightin up the one you have on it right now. But it just sounds like your luggin your motor.

So is that sound normal when im luggin my motor?Like i said,It only seems to do it at low RPMs,in second gear or higher.

Yes, if you lug your motor, it will make a knocking sound. This is most likely the case since you only hear it in second gear or higher. Just keep the revs up, it's not supposed to be lugged.

Sounds like you're lugging it. You have to give it some gas unless you're coasting at a pretty good pace or it will knock and die. Just give it some gas, it's not a friggen utility atv! lol j/p:D
