does anyone make super strong tie rods ends? also who makes upgraded ball joints? i really don't want a wider front end due to the fact that i ride on very narrow trails and would have a real hard time fitting through them with a wider front end.

long story short i was on a 30 mile trail this weekend and about 15 into it i hit a small tree with my right front tire. and it turned my straight tierod into a big smiley face :) and i almost was stranded out there but, i found a big log and did some attitude adjustment :D

walsh race craft makes some pretty sick tie rod ends, I'm sure their tie rods are pretty heavy duty as well

this is the only pic I have of the ones my friend had on his cannondale

you want the tie rod to bend. it saves the expensive stuff

If you have a 400ex, get some 250r tie rods, theyre thicker and pretty strong. I believe the 250r had stronger tie rods because they have steel steering knuckles, while the 400 has weak thin tie rods because they have aluminum steering knuckles that will bend easier.

i'm gonna have to disagree

would you rather have a spindle or steering stem break instead?

:huh reconrider is agreeing with you...I think the heavy duty tie rod ends are a good idea

you want to have parts that are tough enough to take a simple crash/roll, but when somethin serious happens you want something cheap to give.... (tie rods)

the reason why i disagree is that i didn't have a hard crash at all and the tierod bent so bad that i couldn't steer the bike, and i didn't want to be stuck 15 miles in the middle of no where. because the thing was so weak. only by the grace of god was i lucky enough to straighten it out. if that small crash i was in was enough to break a spindle or a steering stem then i would be very surprised and disapointed in the quality of the bike

basiclly i think that if i would have had strong tierods then i would have just came to a stop and that would have been the end of it

but i have a question for you guys, is there a manufactuer that sells strong spindles and steering stems? i really just want to make this bike as strong as possible. not start an argument

one of the strongest stems I have seen to date is the walsh stem, I'm usually not one to promote just one brand, but their products are top notch. Where the stem stops hit the frame its not a welded plate onto the tube, but rather a bolt head which is much much stronger and will be easily replacable if it starts to wear after a few seasons. I wish i could say the same about my lonestar or burgard stems, their stopper flanges have become indented where the frame makes contact.

You're not going to find aftermarket spindles unless you purchase the t-pin or similar front end setup, 400ex spindles are practically the toughest you can buy.

The tie rod is the best 'weak link' to have in the front end. It is relatively cheap and easy to replace. And small and light enough to carry a spare or two for the long rides.

Would you rather bend or break a spindle? A-arm? Steering stem? While on the trail?

Just something to think about:)

Joe
