First off become about 6 inches shorter will help!

the only thing you don't have that you will have to have is a tether kill switch. The next upgrade you will more than likely want to get is front shocks. Go ahead and start racing and talk to everyone at the local track. Decide then what upgrades you want to make. And ride all you can to get in shape!

im 6' 3" and in those tight turns in xc races i can barely fit cuz my knees hit the handlebars and i got bruises all over my thighs from my handlebars. i like being tall but not racing

i wouldn't run nerfs on a 400ex in xc racing cuz the ex doesn't have reverse and there will be times where you'll need to put your foot down to push it back. Other than that, i race a completely stock 400ex in the local hare scrambles (about the same as a gncc).

I would definitetly run nerf bars. The first time you bounce off a tree you will be thankful you had them.

Safety equipment is #1. Then handling, then power. From what I can tell at least I"m a rookie too

i run nerfs, but i cut the innermost web out of the nets. if i need to push off a tree i can put my feet down to do it, and i dont have trees hooking my tires in the woods. the best of both worlds i guess.

I would put a 14 tooth front sprocket on it, and some skid plates. that would be about all you really need to get started.

YOUR PRE RACE PREP IS VERY IMPORTANT-
CHECK ALL NUTS AND BOLTS FOR TIGHTNESS-
SWING ARM PIVOT,BRAKE HOLDER PLATE,COUNTERSHAFT SPROCKET,REAR SPROCKET BOLTS,REAR AXLE AND HUBS FOR SURE.
DRINK LOTS OF WATER THE WEEK BEFORE THE RACE-
A GALLON A DAY -DONT TRY TO LOAD UP TOO MUCH THE DAY OF THE RACE OR YOU MAY EXPIRENCE CRAMPS.
ALWAYS HAVE FUN. GOOD LUCK:cool:

i'll definatly agree with that!^^^^^

there were more than a few races last year where i was in great shape, not tired at all, plenty of energy, then stopped by mechanical failure that could have been prevented if i would have preppedmy quad better (or at all) after the previous race

Your more likely to get entangled with quads without the nerfs, i love them.. also something to grab onto when your trying to flip it back over

What makes being tall a set back? Please inform me.
