I am looking to purchase a 250r quad. The guy is not sure of the year, it has aftermarket plastics. Is there a way to find out the year if I get the VIN or motor number?

on the front of the frame it will have a little gold thingy stating the year and model, however it might not be there, but it is ur best bet

umm best way is to look for these things:

86-87:
swingarm is steel and it goes through the back of the engine.
headlight posistion. Since you mentioned aftermarket plactics you can be 100% but 86-87 should have it on the handlebars.
Gold rims if they are stock. Also the front hubs should of peices of steel between the hub fingers.

88-89:
Aluminum rear swinger with the swingarm in the rear going straight across never attaching to the engine.
The cases are black not a metallic silver color like 86-87 and the frame should have a bar in the back supporting the engine above the swinger. Also if the PO (previous owner) kept the OEM style maier should have the front headlight in the plastic under the handlebars. Also the rims should be silver if they are stock. The a-arms should be silver not gold like the 86-87 and the hubs in the front wont have the supports between the fingers of the hubs.

there are many many other differences but those will help you know what Yr that R is.........also come over to www.rriders.com and post! we always enjoy people joining the club!:macho
