A rev box is put in a bike to keep it from over revving and blowing. One in a stock bike is put in to keep the rpm's to a standard level, ever notice pinning the throttle wide open in like the highest gear and you feel the bike start to die, that's the rev box kicking in. People buy aftermarket rev boxes along with all their new mods to shoot the rpm's up. usually mox boxes add 1100-1000 more rpms. better performance. yeah, thats about it.
