What is the best gearing ratio for woods racing. I know 1st is way too tall and I need to gear down before the first race.

broken record syndrome

anyway try 13T front off a CRF 450 dirt bike first and if you feel you need more then go to a 39T rear

12T up front? bad idea if you ask me. don't be that chep if you plan to regear your quad. the 12T front increases the chances for chain toss and excelerates chain wear do to the decrease in radius of the front sproket. here is what sidewinder spokets had to say. (this is a quote from another post)

If you wish to Drop the gearing on your new ATV, It would be best to change the rear sprocket rather than the front.

Alex at Sidewinder Had the following to say.

"If you drop a tooth on the front sprocket, you will increase wear on your drive chain and front sprocket by 20%, The reason is when you drop a tooth in the front sprocket, the sprocket has to turn more revolutions than before, increasing wear. Also the smaller the sprocket, the tighter the turning radious the chain must follow, this increases wear and friction on the chain and the possibility of throwing it." He said he has been selling all kinds of sprockets for the TRX, YFZ and the Z-400.

if they said this about a one tooth drop up front imagine how bad a 2 tooth drop would be. you would be better of running a 13/39 ratio. that is a +1/-1. i have been talking to another rider and he recently tries this ratio and said it was really good for tight rail riding and that he had to use the clutch alot less

ok if i put a 39 in back and 13 up front ,the stock gearing is 14-38 i think ,how much bigger is the 39 sprocket ,i dont want my chain to hit my prm skid, how much bigger can i go before the chain hits the swing arm guard

Mine is fine with the factory skid using the 39t sprocket.

I know the impact of downsizing on the front. I would like to put a 40t on if it will clear the skid. Has anybody done this, and is it true that it's the same as 400ex?

According to the gearing calculator, if you like the gearing of 12/ 38 w/ 22inch rears, then try 13t/40t or (41t) with the 22inch rears, and you will enjoy it just as much. running this combination will also get rid of the extra slack that your chain has because of the 12t you are running now. :)

IF I PUT A 40 OR A 41 REAR SPROCKET WILL IT CLEAR MY PRM SKID PLATE,HOW MUCH BIGGER ARE THE SPROCKETS

I have the 40T rear. It works great! And Sorry to say, I think any more than that would be Unrideable! Why? The front wheels are clawing at the clouds constantly with even the 40T rear, any more and I can't imagine the problems you would have keeping the front end down and steering.

I already think It is a must that I buy an extended swingarm. I think the gearing is perfect now, but this motor has so much Torque, I can't keep the front end on the ground.

Hope this helps.

Redriderex is running 22inch rears, which makes the already tall gearing even taller. He would need to run 13/41 to be close to the equivelant of 13/38 gearing with 20inch tires. He has already mentioned that he likes the 12/38 with 22inch rears which again is roughly equivelant to the 13/38 ratio with 20 inch rears also.

Would a 14/39 be a significant difference, or should I go with a 14/40 combo for my r. I don't want to lose too much top end, but the gearing for tight trails definatley needs improvement. I've heard that dropping to a 13t front night be too much. I looked in the rocky mountain catalogue, and the biggest they had for a 250r or 400ex was a 39t (I'm sure that these will work). Where did you guys get your 40t sprockets?

when u install a pipe i will make it pull harder , i have run this setup in the last two gncc races and at fl where u can tap one out it did not hurt the top end, but i must say i wish it had 6th gear
