I am getting ready to order a set of +1 a-arms for my 87R. I am wanting to know if i should get +1 forward also. I have heard on the 88-89 you want +1 i think, but i've never heard on the 86-87. I am running the stock 87 swingarm and dont plan on replacing anytime. So should i just get +1 wider, or +1+1's.

On the R I am building(87) and on most of my friends R's we run +2+1's but we all have motor work. If you plan on doing motor work I would say get the +2+1 now instead of spending on the +1 and then needing to spend more later. I like the plus one a lot, it's not a huge difference but you can still tell. Anyway though I say just order the +2+1, you will be happy them...Later

I am going to be racing xc, so i figured +2's would be too wide. I have hiper 4-1 offset wheels, but i do not want to be to wide. So then you would recommend +1 forward for a 87R?

Oh, well I don't know about racing, I don't race yet. Our bikes are for sand. Both mine and my stepdads bikes are 87 and we both run +2+1 and he also runs offsets but he has a 410 and we just ride sand. I guess if your racing and you have the offsets then the +1+1 will be fine. If your going to be doing motor work I would say go with the +2...Later

if your racing xc, you only want it about +1in wider, and maybe 1in longer to keep the front end down, if i was you, i would get the +2+1 a-arms, put them 4+1 wheels on it, and it will be about stock width, with nice shocks, and get a +2 axel on it and she will be good

I have elkas with rezzies and the rpm xc +1 axle now. I just need to get my a-arms and I'll be set. I just can't decide which a-arms to get. Bean are you saying +2's will put my at stock width with the 4-1 offset. I thought it would make it 2 inches wider.

what swingarm are you running? my 87 has a -1 swingarm, so i got +1+1's to keep the same wheelbase, but just shift the weight back a little. it made a huge difference. tons of traction, and the front end stays planted. works great for XC. with 4-1 wheels, you will be 1 inch wider than stock. stock rims are 3.5-1.5 offset. 4-1's are 1/2 inch wider per rim.

I'm running a stock 87 swinger. Thats why i couldnt decide if i should get +1 forward or not.

if you arent going to upgrade to the 88-89 length swing arm, then +1 isnt a must.

if a new swing arm is in your future plans then get the +1 forward

would it handle and hook up a lot better with the -1 swinger and the +1 a-arms? Whats the idea set up for the R? Is it 88 length swing arm a better length to run, or will it be find to keep 87 length?

i agree completely.

as for ideal setup, for XC alot of guys like the 88 length swingarm, and the +1+1 arms. as i said before, i love this setup. IMHO it gives the perfect balance between front and rear traction for XC.

I would get the +1+1 a-arms just because it will langthen your quad and it may also make it more stable. I have a friend that has some and they seem to work quit well.especualy in mx.:D

hell for XC the stock set up is what i prefered. too many people buy a arms and a swing arm when they should be spending money on the best shocks they can get ahold of.

I'd go with the +1 for X country and if you ever decieded to MX i d go with the +2 we dont want you catching any stump's out there:eek2:

he already knows he wants +1 wider arms dude. he is curious about if he wants to go +1 forward also.

In 1988, Honda changed the geometry of the 250r. They moved the a-arms foward 1 inch, and shortened the swingarm by 1 inch. The A-arms themselves did not change, they were moved on the frame.

Many people that have 86/87 style frames will get +1 foward a-arms(and usually wider also) and a -1 swingarm to make the wheelbase and weight bias the same as the 88/89. This centers the weight a little better, which helps a little in technical terrain and helps a lot while flying through the air.

+1 foward A-arms will not significantly help keep the front end down.

So, if you go with a -1 swingarm, then I would say "yes", go with the +1 foward a-arms to retain your wheelbase. However, if you are keeping the stock swingarm, then I can't advise you either way. Maybe send a PM to one of the Pros and ask them about the possible benifits of moving your front wheels foward.

I race desert, and the +1 is a benefit out here. Better overall stability at speed.

I know I want +1 wide. What would the plus one forward do the the geometry, would it make it handle a lot different. Houser has a good deal on +1 +1 that are long travel for stock length shocks. So if they don't make my R handle like crap I think I'll go with them.

Good Morning! A +2 or +2 up 1 is a good choice. As one of the people above stated, a 4-1 wheel will be necessary if you are running XC. The advantage of the wider arm is of course more travel. What you need to decide is how you want the bike to handle. If you want quicker turning, the +2 configuration is better as the bike remains stock length. 1 inch forward will lengthen the bike and slow the turning. Someone above stated that moving the front end forward keeps the front end down. That is not always true. While moving the wheels forward does give you better high speed stability, it does as I said above slow the turning and increase the turning radius. It also gives you the effect of "Technically" moving the weight farther rearward in the chassis and making the front end feel lighter. Accordingly the bike will wheelie easier.
