Before you guys flame me out since this has been asked a billion times, my case is special:)

The quad I would be using is a 400ex with a xr400 cam and already ported and polished. It also has a pipe. So, what else would I need for a nice 416, and where could I get it? Also
is there any motor builders in socal? Thanks for the help!

piston, rings, and gaskets is basically all you need, all long with some knowledge and a maintance manual, and any engine place can do your bore give c & d a call

What 416 kit do you recommend? Could you post a site? Thanks.

Id go with a JE or Ross piston kit. just go in the c&d fourm and ask how much it would cost. if i rememebr right the piston kit is like 140 but dont hold me to that.

So, sorry for being such a noob, but . . . the pistion is the not the big bore (416) cylinder correct? I would need the piston and a cylinder? Thanks

no you take your cylinder to a machine shop and have it bored 80 over, you can still use the stock sleeve

OH, I see. With a 440 you would need a new cylinder, right? Or am I being a noob again?:D :p

yup you'd have to resleeve for a 440 the larget you can go on the stock sleeve is a 426 which is a 120 over and the limit on the stock sleve is 125 i believe

So would this make a 416 a bit more reliable than a 440? Thanks for all the help

A little bit but not a whole lot. You can call Micky Dunlap at Four stroke Tech and see what a Wiseco piston would cost, the JE and Ross are just XR400 pistons and are not the exact deck height, so unless you deck the head, the only way to get the exact deck height is to order a custom Wiseco from Micky Dunlap and it will be the same deck heigtht as the stock piston would be, but if it were a advertised 11:1 that is what you would have, where a JE or Ross 10.8:1 will actually come out to a 10.4:1 or something like that...

I was confused about all of this too but it seems you guys have cleared most of it up. Thanks! Now I don't have to make a new thread about it...

Thanks for all of the replies; they have been helpful. I have one more question, though. As I asked early, does anyone know of a good Southern California motor builder? I really don't want to have to ship it back east if I ever want a 416. Thanks

sparks is out of california, but they are not cheap and you will be waiting. i would just build the 416 yourself unless your going all out.

if you have the rights tools. some basic knowelge of the internals of a motor and a manual. you should beable to put in the cam and ajust the valves. but boring i would leave to a pro. your most likely to mess it up.

Yeah, I don't have any engine experience so I don't think that would do.:)
