Stock shock settings

Ok, i'm not a suspension guru, i'm quite clueless when it comes to it, but i want to set up my stock shocks for woods riding. Here is what someone suggested to me, turn the adjuster at the bottom of the shock (which i believe is rebound) all the way in + (turn it clockwise). and then I turned the top ajuster all the way out - (turned it counter clockwise). I did this for all 3 shocks. I used it in the woods last weekend, and it felt great, but then again, i'm not exactly sure what i've really had to compare it against.
