How often must this be done? When do you know its time to do it?

I'm not sure on the exact amount of time, I just do it every now and then. Whenever I'm bored, or if i have my gas tank off for something I go ahead and adjust them. There will be a ticking noise in the top end when they need adjusted. the longer you go without doing it then more wear it will put on your cam and rockers.

Don't want to steal your post, But, How hard is it to adjust the valves ? I am fairly mechanically inclined, i just have never worked on a quad before... Also what tools will i need ?

It's not that hard at all, just a little time consuming. All you need is a 10mm socket and a set of feeler gauges. I have an aftermarket cam in mine so i set mine at .004 on intake, and .005 on exhaust. The only part that sucks is taking the gas tank and everything off. Other than that, it's just a matter of putting the feeler gauge in between the top of the valves and the bottom of the rockers, and tighten to the correct gap.
