i was wondering if anyone knew what torque you are suppose to use to tighten down the 4 nuts that connect the header to the head on a 400ex? all i have ever seen is snug them down.

I've heard the samething. I guess as long as it doesn't leak it's good to go:D

i have a feeling i usually over tighten them. i will buy new crush washers and not go so tight.

The Clymer manual refers to them as exhaust pipe joint nuts, and during reassembly, it says to ...tighten the exhaust pipe joint nuts, and to ...tighten all fasteners to specs listed in the table. When you refer to the table, it lists only the following:

Exhaust pipe protector bolts 15 ft. lbs.
Muffler band bolts 17 ft. lbs.
Muffler mounting bolts 24 ft. lbs.

During that whole section, it never once mentions the term "exhaust pipe protector bolts" and refers to the heat shield as the heat shield. So your guess is as good as mine.

The official honda manual is the same way.

I'm anal about proper torque.

I've stripped way too much stuff in my day not to be.

use a 1/4" rachet and get it as tight as you can by hand. that should be good enough. it'll keep you from breaking it off with a 3/8" or larger rachet

this thread is 2 years old!! yeah i just snug them up and you are usually good to go. using a 1/4 inch rachet is not a bad idea.
