Gear shift shaft

Question to everyone. Has anyone every broken a gear shift shaft in two? My son snapped is off today. I've never heard of it or seen it. Just curious.
And does the case have to be split of repair?

What kind of bike is it? I've heard of it happening to a Z-400. Chain flew off and the momentum from the engine snapped to gear shaft. It's actually happened to a few I know of.:(

My sons 400ex. When to shift gears today and the darn shifter just fell off. I thought it came loose. But not that lucky. Part of the shaft was still in the shifter. If it's not one thing, it's another.

Probably gonna have to split the cases to fix it..:(
