Is anyone running 22's and 23's on a stock engine. I want the increased ground clearance, but my friends say it will drop my power since Im having to pull bigger tires. Since I have a 14t i figure it will just be back close to stock.

Do any of you guys run 22's and 23's?

Oh yeah I'm lookin at ITP XCT's or XCR's

Oh yeah and Would putting a 13t (with 22's) on the front basicly make it geared the same it is now with a 14t (and 20's)

You shouldn't notice a power difference if you have a 14 tooth. That is a good setup if you only ride trails. The xcr's only come in 20 inch. You can get 22 inch razrs or xcts.

I run Maxxis Razr's, which are actually the height they are marked. I run 22 inch rears and 23 inch fronts on my Raptor and my son's 400ex. I am very happy with the tires and the extra ground clearance I have by using them. I will never go back to shorter tires for trail riding, as I was hitting things all day before I got the taller tires. You are correct about the gearing change. I did all of the math before I changed tires, and yes, one tooth smaller in the front makes up almost exactly for the taller rear tires, and one more tooth smaller in front will gear you down again to where you are now.

Good luck,
Lorrin

23" fronts and 22" rears...
no power difference on a 300ex so you should be ok on a 400ex

I run a 400ex with a "stock" engine, no aftermarket exhaust, but have a K&N filter and jet kit and use ITP XCT tires front and rear for alot of trail riding. I too use a 14 tooth. I'm "happy" with the setup..... but when I put the stock tires on, or my 20" XC tires on, I'm much happier!!! The 20" rear tires handle so much better.... until you get into muddy and rocky situations. (then more ground clearance is always better!)

I just got myself a set of ITP's new XCR's..... they are even smaller in diameter than the 20" XC's.... but I have witnessed they hook up alot better.

To answer your question, I'm happy with my "stock" power with a 14 tooth front sprocket and 22" rear tires.

I have the 22" and 23" xct's and love them. In the desert ground clearance is crucial. Big rocks = bent and broken parts.
As for power, still have plentty of it. I still maintain stock gearing.

300ex, k & n air filter, biggun exhaust, wb rev box, xct's, nerf bars, prm bumper an grab bar.

i have had/have 22" razrs and stock gearing on both my 300ex and 400ex and you dont notice much low end drag, just a LITTLE wheelspin loss maybe. but as for mud and ground clearence, it rocks! now i will warn you, the 22" rear razrs seem fairly heavy, so they arent the best in jumping. but yeah i have happy with the setup.

Dirtclog doesent 300EX's come with 22's stock? So there should be to power change right.

Honda Guy, yes the 300ex does come with 22" rear tires. I could be wrong, but I'm sure the 22" XCT tires are much heavier than the stock 22" tires. This added weight does make a difference with whatever power you have. In other words... if you take heavier tires (usually more ply's), and run them, and then run the same diameter, but lighter tires.... you should notice a significant difference in power.:macho Unfortunately, the lighter tires are known to be less puncture resistant. Hope this helps
