The manual does NOT list an initial valve adjustment for the 450R. It DOES say to inspect them every 1200 miles.

Any thoughts here from the engine pros?

No it uses a shim and bucket type system. It does not require valve adjustments nearly as regular as screw and locknut style adjusters like on the 400EXs.

Initial or not....whats the story with the valves, do you need to have shims before you tear into it? Mines got a serious ticking noise all of sudden (4th ride) on any other motor id say its the valves, on this one.....who knows..... Anyone else notice the same?

yeah i had a ticking noise too and i brought mine to my dealer really quick and they checked it out and he said it was all normal. He said that the 450 engine is comman to make ticking noises. He told me that the bike engine was louder because he has one.

This is good to hear, mine didnt start ticking til this last ride, started all of a sudden....so it made me nervous. I think the motor in this bike just makes a lot of noise. My 400ex always made a lot of noise too....and over time I guess you just get used to it, BUT it was pretty easy to tell when the valve lash was getting loose. This motor is different from the typical 4-strokes were all used to.....just a matter of time to get used to its quirks I guess.

Maybe they have issues like the Z400's. I have two KFX's and one of them ticks and the other doesn't. I adjusted the valves on the one that was ticking and it didn't go away. It turns out it is the compression release or something like that and is common. I wonder if Honda uses the same type system.

Older thread i know, but im wondering are you guys checking/adjusting your valves after breaking in the engine?
