Me and a buddy are heading to Glamis next Friday for a week for Spring Break. We are bringing my 400EX and his Arctic Cat 500i 4x4. He will be running 23" paddle tires on the rear and the stock fronts. Is he gonna be able to get around good with that heavy machine? It has plenty of power to spin them, but I was wondering if it would "sink". I have never ridden in the dunes so I don't have any experience with it. Thanks

i've seen people in magazineswith paddles and as long as you keep your momentum you'll be fine but he won't be able to keep up with a 400ex

shouldn't be much of a problem, I have seen 4x4's with 4 paddles, but I don't think it would turn very well! my dads takin his prairie 650 to lil sahara next weekend with itp mudlites!

at the OR dunes there is a hill called banshee hill, and it is a step long tree shot, and there was a rubi. there with 22' hauler, i think 9 or 10 paddle, and it was just tractoring up it, it was amazing!!

wow! I saw a scramble with 4 haulers on it, trying to go up that hill, and it couldnt, but its WAY smaller now then it was then. My dad's kodiak with 589's on it pretty much sucks....

when i was at LS last year there was a guy on a 650 prarie with paddle masters. the group was 3 preds, 1 rap, and 2 400ex's and he could smoke us all off the line on the drags. i was pretty impressed.

Zephead 400ex's bro-in-law has a prarie650 & in stock trim it impressed the chit outa me. I pulled a guy on his banshee from the 'big' dunes at LS clear back to the south camp without the slightest bit of trouble. No paddles or nothing, I even had a passenger riding along. It was amazed, to say the least. Was pretty fun actually, had a good time cruise'n on the beast.

Last time we went to Sand Lake I rode my Kodiak w/ the stock tires on just let some air out & it did GREAT but then again we aren't big time sand riders but it did climb some big hills in 4x4 was fun!! Isn't it bad to run different front & rear tires on a 4x4?? Just curious ;)

It is bad if you are on hard pack in 4x4 if they are different height tires. The paddles he bought are 25" Paddle Masters I believe for the rear. The stock tires are 26" which isn't much of a difference. He probably won't put it in 4x4 at all I wouldn't think but thanks for looking out.

I made it up banshee hill on a piped 300ex with 8 paddle edges :D
I wouldn't use 4wd if you have paddles on the back and stock fronts. I'm not sure how the transfer case in that quad works but if it has a limited slip diff you can hurt things with wheels turning at different speeds (like when you are getting more traction at one end due to paddles!).
