Whats it like to start your 400EX or 300EX, with no choke with a 42 or 45 pilot jet installed during cold weather, say like 15-40degrees? Is it hard? thanks for all your input, its greatly appreciated

I did the choke removal last night. I still have the stock 38 in.

This morning I went out to start it. I hit the gas about 5 times then hit the start. It burned that gas so I hit it 10 times. It fired right up and never quit.

Right now in Central Arkansas its 25 degress. In a couple days im going to do a couple pull checks to see if everything is lookin right. But starting really isnt a problem.

Yea, it's about 20 degrees here today, and all I had to do, with the 42 pilot, was punch the throttle a couple of times before I hit the starter, and it fired right up. I don't think that cold starting will ever be a problem with the new pilot jet.

I own a 2002 400ex. Waht a pain in the a#$ to start. I have upped the pilot jet to a #42 and have turned the pilot screw out an additional 1/4 turn. Thing starts very hard, and at times my head pipes turn bright red. I plan on putting a pipe on, so I'm gonna rip the bike apart and start from scratch. We'll see!!!!!!!!!!!!:grr

Graphix - be sure to hit the gas 1-5 times before you start it. Always helps having a lil gas in the carb for it to burn.

Also my friends used to be a b**** to start, but after we rejetted the carb it was fine. So if putting a little gas in the carb does work, rejett.

TC - Thanx
Does your friend ever have the problem with the head pipes turning red or exhaust back firing.
Bike has had the pilot jet upped to a #42.

No the head pipe never turned red. He is running a stock 38 pilot, but the main and needle were very lean. After we richened the mixture a little it would fire.

Personaly I'm not sure why it worked but it did.

Also dont use the same jetting in the winter as you do in the summer. Temp. has alot to do with it.

Where the **** is the air screw on the carb. Fuel screw is below, but I'm lost as far as finding the air screw. WHite Brothers told me to adjust air screw.
