Well... Me and my dad might be in the market for one this spring/summer. I've been wanting some input on which would fit our style of riding the best. It would be used 50/50 dirt/road (dual sport). My dad is about 5'10" 230lbs. I am 6'4" 265lbs. I know which is more powerful and faster so that is not a priority. I'm leaning towards the 650 because of the liquid cooling, and power, but money will be tight (which is why I mention the 400). So if anyone who owns one or has any knowledge of these two bikes,,,please speak up. Any likes/dislikes would be appreciated too. Thanks in advance

At 230 & 260 lbs. The 650 R is a heavier and a little harder to throw around. Built more more desert racing. But all & all with your weight and using it on the dirt and street I would go with the 650 R. They also make a nice bolt on hop up kit for that bike. I rode XR 500 before switching to four wheels. I researched the 400 & 650 quite a bit. I was leaning towards the 400 but I ride the woods and weigh 195 lbs.

My buddy had the 650R with the hop up kit. It was a very nice bike. I would get the XR650 and install your own street kit rather than the XL 650

Good Luck

i havent ridden the 650R but i did spend some time on the xr250R Xr400R and Xr600R.i liked the xr400 cause it had good power not too big and it still could be ridden on the street pretty easy without being revved to the moon. the 600R i rode was mostly a steet bike and i really hated it.........it felt like a BMW dualsport to me it also overheated easy too. i really had to go too fast in the tight woods for me to keep in the meat of power.......that engine works off momentum and not grunt pull so it was hard to ride in tight woods then hit a hill.........i would go for the Xr400R or L whichever you choose.........i now ride a yz125.......i would go for a WR426F or a WR250F if you want a BAD Arse trail Xc bike..........rode one it it is the best for that!:macho

Make sure you ride the XR650 before you buy it. It's nice to ride on the street, but you will notice how big it really is when you get it in the woods. Honda just released a CRF250X for the Check it out at Honda's website. I'm concidering the XR400 myself. I'l be looking for a clean used one in a month or two. I'll put a Baja designs kit on it so I can register it. Good luck.
