Time for new fronts on my 400ex. What are the advantages/disadvantages of smaller than stock front tires? What about larger?

Smaller tires will turn more precisely while reducing body roll in corners, but they also take away a little ground clearance. Larger tires do just the opposite, and make your ride a little more forgiving.

what type of riding do you do?
for mx definitely get samller than the 22's that are stock
but for xc you want the 22's on the front
i even know some people when its real bad out that run 23's on the front and 22's on the back instead of the stock 20's
but if you go up on the back tire size it makes you gearing higher

i always keep 2 inches diffrance from the front to the back. 20/22 or 18/20

Im only riding xc..period. I think the standard size is probably the way to go....ive got stock size on the rear so it sounds like that would be the best bet. Kinda what I figured but never ridden anything other than what came on it. Thanks.

I love the way the holeshot 19s corner up front but at high speeds 80+ they get really squirrely. I expected this, simple physics.

I went to a Razr 20 up front and it seems to be a lot more stable at high speeds.

i have 22's in the back and stock up front. my friend also has a 400ex with stocker all around. If i ride mine for a while then ride his it seems like his turns alot easier than mine....like i have heavier steering.

My R tops out at 86.7 consistantly as per gps with mx gearing(14/36), I run a 15/36 when we just ride the dirt roads but never had a GPS handy to record the speeds.

It's an ESR 310 with 38 air striker, trx 5 pipe and a bunch of other stuff.

I don't own a gps, this speed came off 3 different units I borrowed at three different times. I guess they are all wrong.

I don't know about you, but I think that speed is about average for a bike with this many mods. I'm not even the fastest in the group. I ride with a bunch of guys from another forum.

Notice the 36 rear in my post.

dude just stop. we can all agree that you wont hit 86mph with a 14th front sproket. Now maybe ur walmart gps says taht but i seriously doubt its the truth. and u do know that going higher on the back is just like going smaller on the front. :eek2:

14-36 with the right tires will probably pull around 86ish
