Well today 2nd gear messed up on my buddies bike.It still goes into it.Just makes a funny noise and shakes.Probably gonna tear it apart tommorow.Any idea's.The guys at the local honda shop think it's the gear.I am thinking the fork is bent.

Any idea's?

He ain't to happy about this. The bike is an 02 and he is still paying for it.And now he is having to take it all apart.

Good time for a piston and cam if you ask me.

Unless your friend bought the extended warranty, hes gonna have to pay. Honda screwed me over big time on an issue like this, even though the dealor told me that a recall had been issued on the rod bearing

No it's not under warranty anymore.I can fix whatever's wrong with the transmission. So the only thing it's gonna cost him is parts.

We all know it sucks when your bike breaks. It really sucks when it's the transmission though.

its probably just the gear, second and the gear it goes into. if it is like a 300ex it has three or four fingres that come out of the gear and go into holes it the side gear if they get rounded at all they wont ingage.

You will know exactly what's wrong with it once you tear it apart. Most likely will be either the gear, worn dogs, or a bad shift fork. Once you tear it down it should be obvious. Check to make sure the dogs are square and not worn down or rounded off on the edges, as this will cause it to slip out of gear.

Once the gears start slipping you will need 2nd gear #23431-hn1-000 31 tooth, 2nd gear on the input shaft 16 tooth 323421-hn1-000,26tooth gear that dogs into 2nd #23491-hn1-000, left shift fork, and of coarse the center case and clutch cover gaskets.

The 16 tooth may not need replaced but the teeth usually are worn out!
Shift fork will definately need replaced because 2nd pushes it out of the dogs and wears it on one side!

We always replace the 31 tooth any time we have the cases open to prevent further trouble.

My friends old 250x did something kind of like that in 3rd gear making a funny noise and it turned out one of his teeth broke and was stripping out a bunch of the other gears

i am glad someone eles is the tranny club with me.mine has been apart 6 times since i got it because the same bearing keeps going out and ripping second gear up.the last time they installed a timken brand bearing and havent had a problem since.(knocking on wood)second gear is just weak in a 400ex,mine always lets go on the downshift.
