When I got my 400ex it would smoke (light blue) alot on startup but after warming up it would clear up. Everyone i talked to told me that was normal for the 400ex and it was probably the valve seals. So me and a buddy pulled the head and replaced the valve guide seals and put a new top end gasket kit on and it still does it. Im thinking i probably should have put a new set of rings on but the piston and rings in it isn't that old. maybe a year. What else could cause it to burn oil on start like that???

Same here
Its probably your valve seals.
Mine did it for awhile, then I adjusted my valves and I went away.
That may not work for yours , you might end up buying new seals.

Guides may be worn out too. New seals won't always fix it.
