Well it is close to being done. Just bolt on the axel, lights, a couple little things, wood, and the paint and it will be ready for action. The axel isnt in place in the pic, so dont worry...:blah:

Just thought I would show ya'll. Expect the next pic to be a sweet one... :D

Thanks guys, we will be doing all sizes of gaps, just work our way up. We hope to get really comfortable at around 80 ft.

Narly...

Have you used a ramp like this before. I'm talking about the ramp design??? Maybe I'm a bit overconservative, but the structural engineer in me (and that is my job) is saying you need more diagonal bracing. With the ramp bracing being straight up and down, it won't be a very efficient transfer of force from your quad to the ramp, and then to the ground. All I'm saying is take it easy the first few times, and if it starts to tweak, add some diagonal bracing like you'd see in the trusses used for building houses. Triangles = Strong.

If you've made these before with no problems, just tell me to shut up.

LOL. thanks for the info!;) We havent ever made one before, we were going to put some traingle shape in it, but we put a bar in the front. We might still add a couple though to be safe. I see what you are saying. We got it on the axel, and pulled it around lastnight!:D

yeah i think I and someone else had mentioned that earlier in your other post about this ramp.

X bracing is a must. i know some companies dont do it and to be quite honest with you i dont know how they get away with it. a ramp 8 1/2 ft tall makes steel quite flexible. i can grab my ramps fully welded before i put the X's in and i can flex the whole thing.

my landing ramp was the same way as big as it is and as thick as the steel is i could flex that.. ad a few and its stops like a rock

i think it all depends on how heavy of steel you go with. when i build my ramps i always seem to over kill them with heavy steel. sucks cause its so heavy but its pretty sturdy. i havent needed to put any X bracing on my ramps yet. if i put a chain hoist in the back left corner it picks up the whole ramp with little or no twisting. if you build a light weight ramp i can see where it is needed.

narly r shuld put something on it just in case. it will only take you 10 mins and will make it more sturdy.

wired.

im honest to goodness not trying to sound like a smart alleck here. but you always need X bracing.

my ramps use 2x2 14 awg and at 8 1/2 feet they still flex . and as i said my landing ramp is much thicker metal and even it flexed when it was square.

thats a very nice ramp you have there.. i see your using 2x2 or something very close to it.. what thickness is it ?

what are the dimensions of it...im thinking about building one also

Ours is 8 feet tall, and about 20 feet long. I think we are going to try this, and see how it is.Right now we cant budg it. We are going to hit it tomarrow,so we will see..... :D Thanks for the info guys, and Jon you will like this ramp!;) :)

dude..you are the craziest 15 year old i know;)
I have to be honest....I wouldn't hit that...lol..maybe at about 60..but not 80..

i think thats becuase of all the non conventional bracing you have. for instance, you got that center row going.. your base is made from pipe and you have that front piece there that comes forward at an agle and is welded down.

so i guess ill retract my previous statement and modify it... you might not always need X bracing but some sort of side-to-side bracing is in order after a certain heighth.

i know when i split my ramps the bottom section is only like 3 ft tall.. it by no means needs any. but the tall piece does.. i can wobble it.

good luck guys. have fun tomorrow and stay safe. get us some pictures of that beast in action

:eek2: :eek2: :eek2: :eek2: :eek2:

OMG! We HIT it! It is the coolest thing EVER!!!!!!!:eek2: We had it at like 15 feet (I know, but we have to get use to, cause its our first ramp ever) and of course I way over shot it, and about kille dmyself, then we got ok, then moved it to like 40 feet, and I over shot it AGIN! It was the worst thing EVER! It hurt soo bad, i dug into the ground FAR! The landing need to be better before we hit it agin, or move it back. I will get pics asap, we were to buisy today...

The ramp does flex a little, so we are going to put some more braces on it, I dont think we will even need it, but we better. I can do like no footed cans, can cans, no footers, no hander, no hander landers, nothings, close to supermans, heel clickers, and about 3 other sweet things i came up with myself. But thats all pretty much with in a hour i got like 3 tricks down. So I am doin good. I will get pics SOON! We might have some tomarrow! Man i am just SOOOOOOO SO pumped!

And roostin_dale, I havent talked to ya in a while, I am always on yahoo, I am just invisible, get ahold of me next time ur on.

And I just wanna say thanks to everyone for the info, and ride safe. Later.

GREAT !

anyone that is use to FMXing on dirt then hits a ramp immediately improves. the steel ramp is much more efficient in transferring the energy to put you in the sky than dirt.

and yeah put more braces if you feel it needs it, becuase the more it flexes the faster the metal will fatigue and from there on its just all sorts of a mess, i could bend, it could crack, it could dip in etc.

have fun, let us know how it is.

The axel isnt a big deal at all, just 4 bolts. The angel is PERFECT!:D Thats only like a 40 foot gap, it seems small.... cant wait to get to around 80!

Thanks guys. We acually got all the material for free. My friends dad a has a HUGE logging company wich also comes with a HUGE scrap pile.:D We were lucky. but it took about a month to build. We worke don it a lot but not as much as possible.

LazeR I dunno what we are going to be doin, we dont have a good landing right now, and the weather is TERRIBLE, so we will prolly finish putting all the wood on, paint and some othe rlittle things. But if the sun comes out ya never know... But we dont have anything planned, so we prolly wont be doin much...

alright dude, no biggie, on fri if it looks like it might be nice for sat, i will try to get ahold of you. If not i think i may try to hit the noon day trail (an offroad 4x4 trail) on my quad, i guess there is alot of riding out there. who knows though

and yea ramp is lookin awesome. You should bring it to the dunes this summer :P muhahahaha

I will get detailed pics soon. but there is just too bars. and the axel bolts to teh top of it with 4 bolts. We just un bolt it, then the ramp goes on the ground, and the axel just sets there... We could use it with it on, but it would make it at a WAY more of a angel, but it would be a good backflip jump then!:eek2:

LazeR
02-27-2004, 01:34 PM
just find somewhere with a huge step down jump, put your ramp there with the axle on and do a backflip! You could be the first!
