I know magazines can be untruthful from time to time, but the factory manual never lies. If the manual recommends it, then use it. :)

The manual says 40w for the tranny my honda dealer gave me this 80w 85w gear oil for the 250r and cr motor. I just wanted to make sure this is the incorrect oil then for the tranny right? It comes in a taller bottle with a pointed tip.

No, the 80w 85w is the correct oil to use in the tranny. It designed to be used in the tranny.

I like the Honda oil, I'm runing 10w40 in the Motor and 20w50 for the trany.

I've had good luck with the 20w50, and don't like the heavier oils for the clutch. Just my prefrence.

Also K&N makes a really nice oil filter, might have to order the one for the CRF450r if they havn't updated the part numbers yet...

How often do you guys plan on changing your oil?

I thought he was asking for engine oil(oil filter in pic?). You can actually put the 80 85 tran oil or gn4 honda oil in trans, I would use 80 85 in trans, red bottle, tall point on top, goes in 250r trans.

Use the silver bottle in the engine side. I'd wait for a couple of oil changes first though to let everything brake in. It is a super slick semi synthetic so it is best to wait for a couple of oil changes first. I'd use the HP Trans fluid in the tranny. It works best and will make it shift better. It is better to use than the 20W50 and isn't really thicker. It is a low viscosity 80 weight. It isn't like the automotive 80W90.

So what oil would you suggest for the first couple oil changes in the engine?

And the HP trans fluid in the tranny?
(Which is the tall pointed red bottle that goes in 250r...)

I've been running GN4 in the engine. I've changed it twice now. I'll probably go one more change then go to the silver bottle HP4 with moly. The tall pointy red bottle is the HP Trans fluid. I put that in the tranny first thing.

Yep, use the HP Pro tranny oil in the tranny. Check out this link:

2004TRX450R:
I understand you're running the GN4 for the 1st 2-3 oil changes, but why then are you switching to the SILVER bottle HP4M, why not the gold bottle HP4? Is the only difference the Moly? Do you consider the HP4M (silver) better than the HP4 (gold)? Why?

Thanks guy.

The Moly stuff is supposed to be better I guess. I think that is the only difference between the gold and silver bottles is the addition of the moly. I initially run the GN4 because it is only dino oil and has no synthetic in it. The HP4 is a synthetic blend.

where do you change tranny oil? and how many day/months/years do you have to change it :)

Tranny side drain bolt behind rear brake lever. Also, remove check-bolt (with copper washer) mid-way up the tranny side case and fill with new tranny oil until it comes out the check-hole.

Needs changing every 600miles I think...no where near as often as the motor oil.
