The manual said to use 10w40 oil in the transmission. The dealer told me to use hp trans oil sae 80w/85w and sold it to me. What do you guys think?

In a long and complicated way 80W gear oil is roughly equivalent to 10W30 motor oil.

Lukester-
I went thru this 2 weeks ago...

Use the Honda HP Pro tranny oil (80w/85w). The manual actually does say to use this...and the bottle says its for 2-strokes only because its meant to be used in engines that run tranny-specific oil....which used to be only 2-strokers (CR and 250R). CRF's and 450R's should use this oil. It should NOT be used in 400EX type 4-stroke quads whose oil runs thru the tranny and the engine.

If you don't want to use it, apparently the catch-phrase is:
"no moly in the tranny"

This post is exactly why we need some posts set to stickies. New owners keep asking the same questions over and over....no one does searches, so use the STICKIES on a couple of the key posts....

Yes use HP Trans oil It is the correct oil to use. It is a low viscosity 80wt. If you pour it along with regular gear oil it is very different. Don't use automotive gear oils. They are to thick and won't lube the small bearings very well. You can also use 10W40 if you like but the HP Trans fluid is the way to go.

I'm using Klotz Flex Drive 30 in the tranny and MX4 10w40 for the top end after it is broken in.

Use the HP trans. Standard 10-40 tends to break down quicker when used in the trans. We sell this to all our Crf owners.
