Hey guys,

A very good friend of mine who owns a Z400 and frenquents Z400 Central claims that the carb to get is the 40mm FCR sold by Service Honda for the CRF450. I think it's about $335. He also stated that this carb is the "next generation" FCR with updates to things like the accelerator pump, etc that are more suited for 400-500ish single cylinder machines vs the regular FCR's which are also used on mulit-cylinder street bikes. Anybody know anything about this? If this is true, seems like the way to go....

Thanks,
Fred

Yuuup it's all true...

It wasn't designed to fit a 400ex so it's not a perfect fit but it will work. Rocky Ridge Racing has this setup down pat..;)

Is there a kit that I can buy from Rocky Ridge to make it all fit (with boot adaptors, etc)? If so, how much is it? Does anybody have their phone # or website?

Hey Rico, what are the problems as far as the fit goes ? How does it mount getting it and installing it vs. getting the adapter kit. I guess..what kind of problems are to be expected, and can someone "fix" the adapter problems themselves ? Thanks buddy.

i talked to rocky mount. and he said all that really had to be done was the airbox moved forwards. his kit consists of plugs to block the tps sensor and hot start and a throttle cable. to me for him to charge 450 is to high when the carbs 335. he does jet it for you but my quad will likey be dyno tuned anyways.

the thing i wonder about is the cab on each year bike is different. which year to get. the 2003 is the cheapest

every year has a different price and parts number. i'd just go with the 03 since it's the cheapest

I think the difference in the carbs is their jetting. Some are jetted different than others, changing the price?

service honda is great

I lent my carb to my friend with a 440ex everything fit except the throttle cable. The throttle cable inlet for the fcr40 is different than a stock 400ex. I used stock 400ex air boot to mount the carb to my z400, so the stock 400ex boots work fine.

Yes some of the carb years are jetted differently.

If you still have a stock bore motor the carb will bog going from idel to WOT. But if you have a big bore this isnt the case.

In had the 40mm in my 400ex. The is sevreal fitment problems with this carb. First The intake boot is too small so you have modifiy the boot to fit the 40mm.Plus the carb is shorter than the stock for the intake to the air box. I made a longer intake tube from the air box to the carb. Also the carb sit high and you may have problems witht the gas tank sit on top of the carb.. I did make every fit good but it took a little effort. i also used the stock cable and made it fit the the thumb throttle. I don't recommend doning this and I would buy the cable that fits. I'm not sure which cable fits, but Somebody sould know.

The proformance of this carb is. It use a lot fuel. I was using a 195 jet which is hugh compared to the 165-170 I was using with stock carb. Another problem I had, i couldn't get at the chock. you have to remove the plastic for the most part. another thing about the chock is the chock lever rubs against the gas line putting a hole in two diffrent lines.

All in all I would go this carb is more of a pain the *** than it was worth . I would go with the 39mm carb. it just fits better and is a better acrb for the 400ex.

I also would go with either carb if you don't have a lt done to the motor. I had a 416 and a 440 and w/ Port and polish, cam, piston aao on. I think the carb was a little big for the 416. i lose a noticeable bit of lowend.

I hope this anwser some of you ????
