If you're wanting opinions, mine is neither....

Both will pass more dirt than stock, I haven't tested the 450R, but I have on a couple 400EX's -- even on a significantly modified 400EX a filter is a waste of time - you gain nothing but some extra dirt in your engine.

If you must - run a K&N with an oiled foam wrap.

so u would leave the stock air filter in?

I haven't tested with a 450R, but yes, the stock filter will be staying on mine until someone can prove to me that it will make any difference what-so-ever in power output.

Even then, it better be a noticible difference... I've been burned before by filters that don't perform as advertised & don't filter well (and both K&N and Uni are on my list).

But like I said - If you really want a filter setup, I'd probably feel relatively safe with a K&N and a good foam wrap.

What do you think of the UNI with or without an Outerware? Airflow and protection.

I've got to wonder if that setup doesn't flow worse than stock.

Outerwears are nice for filter cleaning though...

Well the Uni filters look pretty much the same as stock to me. I think they will filter about as well provided it is serviced and oiled properly. The K&N filters will flow more air and will give more power but they will also not do the best job in filtering. So you need to decide what is more important to you. On something like a 400EX you can bore the cylender so it is much less costly to rebuild the engine from dirt contaminants. On something such as my 450R it has a nickasil lined cylender so if it get's dirt in it and messes it up I'll have to buy a new cylender. So I'll be sticking to stock.

The UNI will flow better than the stock filter, because there is more foam area. This is at least true with mine, I got the full cage/filter replacement. Now I am running NoToil filter and oil, and so far so good. Actually I had them make a custome filter for me, whick was really cool of them!

There maybe a difference in K&N than UNI, in Fla. there is a lot of dust sometimes...........I ran a K&N w/2 Outerwears and still had fine dust in my intake boot so for the most part I run UNI w/FAB1 sprayed on it.............when it's not dusty I run K&N w/ foam outerwear (sprayed w/ Fab1) I bought for $15 from http://gtthunder.com/
it's a real good fit and kinda of the best of both worlds but whatever you buy keep an eye on the intake tube..it will tell you if it's filtering or not.I have to much money in my 416 to give it a short life............

Take a uni and face it at the sun. Then look into the inside.

You will see beams of light shining thru.

Same with a K&N.

What does this mean? Dust can have a straight path into your intake without being forced around corners to get the opportunity to stick to the oil covered foam or gause.

I've had trouble with K&N's passing dirt & when I've seen the uni filters with the same issues, I've not bothered even testing them ---- especially after I found no performance increase with the K&N.

Aftermarket filters may have more filter area, or may flow better - but if the engine doesn't require more flow, you're wasting your money an taking your chances.

BTW - FAB1 filter oil is one of the best I've used...

I have seen this with the K&N but not with the UNI. It seems some of the UNI filters I have seen are actually smaller than stock but that is mostly on dirt bikes that I have seen.

K&N might give some more power, but it isnt good if you are going to be in muddy conditions.

stay with a foam filter. check out twin air

I've had nothing but bad luck with K&N filters, even with the outerwear, and the same goes with my friend that used it. Everytime I checked my filter, the inside of my intake boot was lined with fine dust since it gets very dusty where I live. I switched to Uni on both my Banshee and 400EX and all traces of fine dust in my intake boot disappeared. I'll never go back to K&N unless it's in my car/truck.

K&N all the way!!! its proven that you will gain horse power. Dirt will not get in if you oil your filter more then once a year. It does a great job.:)
