I just purchased a used 2000 400 ex at a local dealership. The bike is in awesome shape. It is all stock except a few stickers. Here's the problem, when i try to start it when its cold,(Like in the 20's,or 30's)it can be a pain. With full choke,it misses, stalls, backfires a little.Once its warm you can take the choke off, then its fine.Runs great after that. Also starts right up.A few shops around here say its common on the 400.Is it possible its bad gas?It was in there when i bought it.Any help will be appreciated.THANKS

You could drain the fuel and see but they are pretty cold blooded. I'd say the shops you took it to are correct.

I have 2002 and it is the same way you can put in a bigger pilot but i didn't i just learned how to feather the throttle and not use the choke as much as possible. the honda 400ex has a very fast accelertor and if you pump the gas with the choke on you will flood it.

yeah, they are naturally cold blooded. i would try tinkering with the fuel skrew maybe. many people on here say not to use the choke. however, i find it best to use the choke. what i do is put it on full choke and pump the throttle 3 or 4 times. i then hit the start button without giving it any more gas. if you keep giving it gas you will foul the plug. good luck

I removed my choke, installed a 42 piolet and went 2 turns out on the mixture screw. Starts easier than ever with about 3 pumps on the gas:D

I have the 42 piolet jet, along with the choke. All I have to do is to pump it acouple of times, and it fires. As soon as it fires, I take it to half to no choke, depending how it wants to act .
