View Full Version : Is 165 main jet too large?

I just ordered an e-series slip-on from Marcums and he is also sending me a KN filter w/outerwears and 165 mainjet. I have no mods and I was wondering if 165 would be appropriate for my setup. If it matters I live in N.VA and I think we are near or a little above sea level.

the only true way to find out is put it in & ride it a while & check your plug

For me that is right or maybe a little rich.
Check the Wide open throttle section at the end of the page of this Keihin carbutation tip's
http://www.keihincarbs.com/tips/gate.html

If you have to use 160-165 main jet, probably you have to change your pilot jet to #42

A 165 is too rich. Start out with a 40pj and a 155 or 158mj.

i run a 45 pilot jet, raised needle and a 165 main jet and a colder plug(a 9 instead of an 8) and my plugs look perfect. You have to test it yourself...what works for me might not for you.(i took off the air box lid and i have a k&n filter)

I have a DMC, K&N, no airbox lid with a Dynojet 160 main, #40 p/j,
stock needle position, 2 1/2 turns out on airscrew.

Runs excellent and plug is perfect.

Hope this helps,

Glamis

I hope this helps you:
When I had an e-series I ran:

165 MJ, 40pj,
4th clip on Dynojet needle (from top),
18 disks (6 more than you have),
3"x6" square hole cut out of the lid.

The bike screamed!

When I ran it in wet conditions, I had the following:
155 MJ, 40pj,
3rd clip,
15 disk
stock lid

I think the 165 is going to be to rich for you. You can always try it out and see how it feels. If it studders at WOT, then pull the lid off and see if it makes a differance. If the studder goes away or feels better, then you know your to rich.

You can always chop the plug, but tell you the truth, I have better luck going by how the bike feels.

Good luck playing around with it. When you get it right, it going to scream!

STUNZ that was the most helpful post yet. I will try your jet settings and see if they work. I will keep you all informed of how it performs after the 165MJ. Thanks,
Justin

I have the wb slip-on with the suggested 12disks, k&n filter w/outwear prefilter, holes in airbox, 165main jet, needle clip is the 3position from the top. Originally the k&n jet kit recommended a 170 main but soon found out it was too much. Dropped to 165 and its perfect. Keep in mind all engines have their own temperment but hope this helps. Your gonna really like the increases in power :D

I have the White Bros E series pipe, K&N w/ Precharger and (6) 1" holes in my airbox lid.

I replaced the stock 38 Pilot and 148 Main with a 40 Pilot and 160 Main. After running my quad for a couple of hours and then checking my plug, I am running too rich. I am dropping down to a 158 or 155 main.

The White Bros info says you don't need to re-jet for the pipe so for my bike the jetting adjustments for the Airbox lid mods and K&N filter are going to fairly minor.

I will say the pipe, filter and jetting helped to wake up my 400EX. I think a 416 Kit is next.

How many disc's do you run?

Here is what Terry emailed me this morning regarding the setup I am going to run....

I have heard of a few guys saying the 165 is too rich but they are trying to run with an airbox lid on. The best set up I have seen is a modified air box lid or complete removal with the 165 main and 8 discs on the pipe. Not much is gained from the larger pilot on a stock motor, maybe just a little easier starting sometimes but no more power.

I run with 12 disk and if I am not going to be in mud I take the airbox lid off and it runs great. So when are you going on 234??

I am hoping to get out there this weekend. Another rider on here 3punksdad is planning to ride as well. But if I don't have my pipe and carb rejetted by then I may not go. Shoot me an email this weekend. If I go it will be Sunday morning sometime.

Later,
Justin
