Hey everyone.....man its been a while since I’ve been around here....not much has changed. Anyway, back to my dilemma. I am in the process of ordering a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 QC 4x4. Any have one issue. RIM SIZE. I hunt, I go off road, I drive the city streets, I tow. What do you think? Thanks for the help....

since you said you go off road and hunt with it, I would go with the 17" wheels. You will have a much better selection of tires for a 17" rim than you would for a 20". The 20" rim is just for onroad trucks IMO.

If i remember correctly.. Maybe not it was a while ago.. But my dad had those on his expedition and the 17s were some Really wierd size tire or something and we got a flat with no spare and a bunch of places said 17s were rare and some places didnt even have a 17" tire..

I would imagine that 20" off road tires would be harder to find... MUCH smaller selection. Also 17" wheels are becoming very common on trucks now...so the tire company's are making more.

17's, I think it would be a better all around tire. The 20's would look cool, but I don't think they would preform well offroad or towing, just not enough sidewall in my opinion.

if you do any type of off-road. i would diffently recommend the 17's. the 20 are awsome rims, but there is not very much sidewall to the tires and you would be taking the chance of damaging the rims on rocks.

17's, I've got them on my dodge with 34 inch goodyears and they are a good combo. The 20's wouldn't give enough sidewall if you were offroad. You would run a big risk of denting a rim.

I got a 03 and went with the 17's. 20's to low pro. Didn't make it look like a truck. Also I didn't want to buy new tires for 17's I wouldn't even want to know what the 20's would cost.

i just got rid of my 03 Ram 1500 (for a 04 CHEVY Silverado XC 4x4) that had 20's, #1 they are ROUGH as HELL!!! #2 do not offroad at all (I hunt, fish, and hit gravel roads all the time), #3 the 17's are better for what you need, my roommate has a 03 ram just like mine only 4x4 and 17's and his rides so much better and offroads much better

get the 17's

well i ordered her up with....the 17 inch rims. If you get the 20's, you have to go with the 3.92 ratio, and since this truck has the hemi, I need all the gas mileage I can get. So I opted for the 3.55 and the 17's. The truck looks bad ***** with the 20's, but not practical for me. oh well.....Thanks to everyone for your input, it really helped me out.

actually the ratio's are the same, the 3.92 with 20's are about the same as 3.55 with 17's, the tire size on the 17's is about 1 to 1 1/2" shorter,,,i think you made the right choice with the 17's,,later

the ratios are close but NOT the same. I don't mean to be defensive, but I did too much research on it. At 70 mph with the 3.55 and the 17's you are at 1828 RPM, with the 20's and the 3.92 you are at 1932 RPM. Do the math.. Your revs/mile on the 20 are 630.5 and for the 17s are 650.2. The final drive ratio of the trans is .67.
