I'm thinking about getting a 400ex as soon as I get rid of my 250r. I'm getting rid of it because it's all setup for mx and the only thing that it's really fun on is a track and I kind of want something that is a little more friendly on the trails or just out playing around. There also isn't a nice track within about 200 miles. I also want a 4 stroke for a little smoother power band and something that my wife would be able to ride. As far as power goes the only thing that it has is an fmf pipe and k&n filter. No motor work. I do have +2+1 a-arms and a +4 axle and works shocks. What I'm wondering is will the 400ex be a disappointment for me. From dyno charts I've seen it doesnt look like there is much difference in hp in the 2 but everyone always says a 250r will smoke a 400ex. So I guess the ultimate question is how do they compare in power and handling?

i think the handling will fell just about the same to u. But the power wont be there on the top end which u dont really want.

I have an 02 ex and I bought it for the same reason you want one.So far I love this bike.Just don't line up next to any other high performance bikes and expect to see anything other than roost. The 400 is pokey compared to most of the other bikes. It's still a blast though. It can out wheelie anyother bike out there. It is a great hill climber. If you wanna go first gear through the woods it don't care.Or if you wanna go WFO it don't care either. So far it has been very reliable.Nother expensive has broken yet and I have crashed it more than once.

If anyone says the 400 is to slow to race there probably right. It;s definitly not to slow to have fun on.In the woods it can run with just about any other bikes.

If you can't tell I really love my 400.Now I just got to get it rejetted so I can see if this slip on helps or not.

If you are trying to compare a 400EX against any other quad, you'll probably be dissapointed. Yeah, the 400EX has better handling, but let's be honest, most of us aren't good enough to take full advantage of the handling characteristics of a 400EX over a Banshee.

However, if you're not looking to compete against another quad, I think the 400EX is perfect for you. The ergonomics and handling characteristics will be very similar to the 250r (with similar mods), so you should feel imediately comfortable on the 400EX. Electric start is great, it has a very smooth powerband, but with enough power to get serious when you need to. Plus, with the reliability of the 400EX, rest assured you won't miss any riding opportunity due to repairs.

You happy with the 400EX seat you have on your 250r? :-) Then, I assume you will lke the rest of the quad when you get it :-))

Thanks for all the replies. Sounds like it's exactly what I'm looking for.

That's not a 400ex seat. Is it?
