Hoping to find a few who have raced their built 416, 424, 440, etc against the new 450R. I can't afford the new 450R but am almost done rebuilding my EX (Ross 424 piston, Hotcams stage 2, 39mm FCR, etc, etc) and just am curious how the "old dogs" (EX) built up do against the new red machine (450R). Thanks!

I just got back from Glamis and I met my dad out there and low and behold....he had a new 450R. NICE quad...and fast. That thing revs like a 2 stroke and has GOBS of power. I rode it for a little while and will say, if I was in the market for one, that would be it.

I didn't race him because he was still breaking it in. I'm sure it would beat me anyways.

Saturday at the track there was one. In the 50 yard sprint from the starting line to the 1st corner I could pull about 3 bike lengths on him. I could pull 1 1/2-2 on the yfz with LRD slip on. It was like that both motos. Me and the 450R were both running 18in turf tamers, the yfz running 18in holeshot mxr's. I've got it on video.

Airhead,

You didn't say what your setup is on your EX. Can you specify?

Thanks,
Quadzilla

11:1 440 with what looks to be the XR gaskets, they are really thin.
Ported
39mm FCR
HRC cam
K&N
WB cdi
WB Pro Meg

I honestly don't know what else has been done to it, I bought it built. The second time I took it to the dunes I was draggin it all day and ended up blowing up the clutch. It shattered the clutch basket, broke the inner hub, pressure plate, and all 7 fibers.

Tnine416,

Don't know yet, still waiting for the motor to come back from the builder. See below where it says "coming in two weeks". Should revise it to say something like "coming in 2 months". The builder has had the motor for a month in a half already. It's all dissassembled and the head has been ported/polished. He says that he is just waiting for the piston to come in (everything else is in).

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, anymore with some info on built EX's vs 450R's? Nice to hear the Airhead beat a stock 450R with his 440EX. Means that the old dogs are still a bit competitive....

Hey airheadedduner,
Have you posted the video anywhere?

No, I wish I could though so people would believe it:o Looks like I will be racing sunday so I will try to get some pics so I can post it. I should also say that the distance I was putting on the YFZ was off the start. After that I didn't pull on him anymore. Moto 1 I gated next to the 450R(actully 2 gates down but there was no one between us) and off the line initially we were even but once I started shifting I just pulled him. Moto 2 I gated next to the YFZ and I jumped out ahead, on video I don't pull on him anymore but it don't look like he gains on me any. From watching the tape it looks like the yfz really comes out of corners with a snap. He could clear this double right out of a corner that I couldn't do. On the starts the difference could have just been tires. I have raced him a few times before and he has beat me once, but I was running stock 20inchers on the rear. The EX is not completly out but if you plan on buying a bike new I would go with the yfz or 450R.

I raced the national at glen helen last week and was kind of suprised with my 416. I stayed right next to the yfzs and 450rs up the small hill at glen helen.

That is cool. Do you use mostly lowend up the hill?

Can you get a HRC cam for a 400ex????
I think it's only for the 450R

Hea mickey it's nice to know the 450's won't be able to touch me.

There is a HRC cam for the xr400, which will obviously work with a 400ex. It is a little expensive though. I don't know if there is one made specifically for the 400ex or not.

A friend on the west coast said his yfz couldn't come close to beating a sparks 465 on methanol over the new years.
