is there anyone on here who will clean up the intake port on my z400 and polish out the exhaust port? i dont have the money for a full race 450 and cams and porting and carb, ill be getting them in a few months hopfully, but for now id like to get a litle clean up so i get a lil more power, is there anyone who does this? how much do u charge? i did it on a few blasters b4 but im a lil scared to do it on a 4stroke

fasterz, you can do it yourself if you're careful. Just get a die-grinder and clean up the casting flash. I would highly advise against actually attempting to port the intake yourself unless you've got some experience with it and access to a flowbench. I often wonder, even with some of these big name tuners, if they even flow the heads after porting. If they do I've never heard of anyone getting any flow numbers and being able to substantiate them.

dont port the intake your selve, you can make the split after the carb in the head a little more pointed, but dont smooth it out you will **** it up bad, but you can do the exhaust, just smotth the exhaust out and where it bends up from the vavlve grid away the bakc side a bit to enlarge it.

no i do it by eye. i did it on my sled last week and the difference is amazing. i think i gained like 5hp. everyone was telling me it wouldnt do anything but now somehow im beating them in drags by like 50-60 feet? you dont need flow benches and everything to do a good port and polish job.

my shop can do serti valve jobs, which means port and polish, larger valves and skinnier valve seals, except its very expensive for him to do it. and he uses a flow bench.

porting a 1979 snowmobile motor is a little different than porting a 02 or newer quad motor

yea its a 2 stroke instead of 4 stroke but its still the same princibles.

not really. a 2-stroke piston piston acts like your valve. whereas a 4-stroke you can modify those and custom them to your riding style and you dont do that with a 2 stroke. another thing is the timing of the cylinder is changed with porting on a 2 banger and a 4 stroke you really dont do much cylinder work on it to make different power...............they are 2 totally opposite animals my boy:p

Porting a 4 stroke changes how much and how fast the intake charge enters the CC, and leaves it. Porting a 2 stroke changes timing, max. RPM, powerband, compression, and a world of other things. In my opinion, it is the most crucial point in a motor. Changing the height of a port by 1/32" can shift the powerband 2000 RPMs higher. You can make a motor have power over a broad range or have a 300 RPM window of explosive power like that found in drag sleds. Not dogging on you ReconRider, more like informing. I imagine you just smoothed out the castings in the cylinders on your Jag, which is usually fine unless you get too greedy with your grinder. The actual port windows are what really affect the behavior of the motor. :)

I just had this guy do mine a couple of weeks ago. http://www.ericgorr.com Along with the port & polish, he also lapped the valves. and cleaned everything up. Looks like brand new.
